Architecture

PHYSON is a heterogeneous high performance general purpose computing system. It has a total of 53 pcs. 64-bit Intel Xeon® processors, of which:

  • 8 pcs. E5335 with 2 GHz operating frequency
  • 40 pcs. E5420 at 2.5 GHz operating frequency
  • 1 piece. E5645 at 2.4 GHz operating frequency
  • 4 pcs. E5-2620 at 2 GHz operating frequency
  • 2 pcs. E5-2650v4 with a working frequency of 2.2 GHz

The system has a 524 GiB of RAM and 6.5 TB disk space.

Most computing nodes consist of 8-core SMP platforms with the following characteristics:

  • 2 pcs. 64-bit Intel Xeon® 4-core processors
  • 16 GiB shared RAM
  • 250 GB SATA2 hard drive to store temporary files
  • InfiniBand dual-band controller (20 Gbps)

The system also has a GPU computing node with the following features:

  • 1 piece. 64-bit 6-core Intel Xeon® processor
  • 12 GiB RAM
  • 2 pcs. graphics processors nVidia Tesla M2090
  • 500 GB SATA2 hard drive to store temporary files

Two cluster computing nodes consisting of 12-core ccNUMA platforms with the following characteristics were added to the cluster:

  • 2 бр. 64-битови 6-ядрени процесори Intel Xeon®
  • 64 GiB споделена оперативна памет
  • 250 GB SATA2 твърд диск за съхранение на временни файлове
  • InfiniBand контролер с пропускателна способност 56 Gbps

The most recent addition to the cluster is a 24-node computational node with the following characteristics:

  • 2 pcs. 64-bit 6-core Intel Xeon® E5-2650v4 processors
  • 94 GiB shared memory
  • 500 GB SATA3 hard drive to store temporary files
  • InfiniBand controller with a throughput of 56 Gbps

A 1.75 TB central data storage network is provided by a file server consisting of 4 pcs. of 500 GB SATA2 disks. Computing nodes access storage through a single-grid Ethernet network.

Performance

The theoretical peak cluster performance when working with double-precision floating point numbers is Rpeak = 3.5 Tflops and the real by LINPACK is Rmax = 1.89 Tflops (does not include the graphics node performance). Detailed performance information for the cluster can be found here
